Tips for gathering evidence to demonstrate your skills

The important thing to remember when gathering evidence is that the more evidence the better - that is, the more evidence you gather to demonstrate your skills, the more confident an assessor can be that you have learned the skills not just at one point in time, but are continuing to apply and develop those skills (as opposed to just learning for the test!). Furthermore, one piece of evidence that you collect will not usualy demonstrate all the required criteria for a unit of competency, whereas multiple overlapping pieces of evidence will usually do the trick!

FWPSAW4204 - Plan and monitor board conversion

What evidence can you provide to prove your understanding of each of the following citeria?

Plan conversion operations

  1. Assess flitches and cants for types of boards that can be cut and determine optimal cutting pattern.
  2. Plan and document cutting patterns to maximise output and minimise wastage.
  3. Develop timber cutting schedules and work orders and brief sawyers in line with organisational procedures.
  4. Identify variations in timber characteristics and report to sawyers.

Monitor board conversion operations

  1. Assist sawyers to evaluate flitches or cants and sawing problems.
  2. Monitor board cutting processes; assess for quality of cutting pattern, suitability to flitch or cant condition and ability to maintain schedule.
  3. Modify cutting patterns and schedule to ensure optimum performance and communicate to sawyers.
  4. Assist sawyers to reject sub-standard flitches and cants and ensure they are disposed of in line with environmental protections practices.
  5. Ensure processed boards are directed to designated area for storage or further processing.
  6. Complete and maintain records of cutting output in line with organisational procedures.
  7. Investigate, record and report major processing and equipment faults and resolve or report to appropriate personnel.
